Stop Hate Speech: No to hostility online

The freedom to form opinions and an open debate are among the core values of a free society. However, social media and below-the-line commentary on news platforms have lowered the threshold for hostility on the internet. Women and young people are affected more often than others.

Concerted action where lines are crossed

With the support of the Migros Pioneer Fund, the Stop Hate Speech project is doing pioneering work on this new phenomenon. Its objective is to track down hate speech on the internet using an algorithm known as the bot dog. Meanwhile Stop Hate Speech is also creating a digital contact point offering information to those affected. Checklists will help assess where lines have been crossed and identify options for action. This will strengthen media competence and raise awareness of the issue among the population.

Technology meets civil society

Hate speech is a deeply emotional issue. Handling it sensibly calls for tough but objective discussions. The pioneering project Stop Hate Speech therefore addresses the problem by combining technical and civic approaches. A cross-language volunteer community will be established to intervene directly in discussions affected by hate speech.
