After just six months the battery on that new smartphone has drained, the home trainer has been standing unused in the corner for months, and the coffee machine has stopped working - many of our electronic devices or appliances are rarely used - or only for a short time. If a device stops working, we usually decide to buy a new one instead of getting it repaired.
The manufacture of electrical devices consumes a lot of energy and raw materials, and this increases our carbon footprint. But when you buy a new appliance or device, there are many ways of increasing and extending its service life.
With an app that counteracts the throwaway mentality
Loopia aims to make people aware of the long-term effects of using a product for longer and more intensively, by coming up with a solid concept to counteract the throwaway mentality. Enabled by the Migros Pioneer Fund, the project has developed an app where consumers can register and manage their devices, regardless of brand or where they bought it. With the app, a single click will locate the warranty documents. And just as easily and quickly, users have access to service providers who can repair, share, resell, or recycle their devices.
Better value from products
Loopia’s aim is to stop people thinking of electronic devices and appliances as disposable products, but rather as durable goods with a long service life. If the number of new products sold goes down, then this development will have made a positive effect on reducing CO2 emissions and resource consumption.
