muse: Listening museums

How do museums maintain their audience appeal? They listen to their visitors and create experiences tailored to their needs. An innovative data collection tool gives museum visitors not only a voice, but also the opportunity to become an active part of an exhibition. With the help of interactive, playful applications, museums can find out for example how a work of art or an exhibition is being experienced and which areas in particular get visitors thinking.

Benefits for museums and visitors alike

The pioneering project muse has been made possible by the Migros Pioneer Fund and is supported by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne. The audience evaluation project helps museums and other cultural organisations to get to know their visitors better. In addition to quantitative data, such as geographic and demographic information, the tool also collects qualitative findings on the direct impact of an exhibition visit. The focus of the tool is on creating playful interactions with participants and ease of use – for museums and visitors alike.

Using findings for improvements

muse allows museums to listen to their audience. Museums can use the findings to take greater account of the perspective of visitors when curating and developing their exhibits. This helps them to remain firmly established as relevant places in society, both now and in the future.
